How I Made More Than $3,000.00 By Baking and Selling Amish Friendship Bread: Recipe and Photos

Amish Friendship Bread
Cook Time
We Need $3,000.00 For My Granddaughter's Trip To Japan
When my Granddaughter (who I later adopted) was a Junior in High School, she announced that her Band class had the opportunity to go to Japan to perform. She was a member of the Color Guard in the band. For those who are not familiar with the Color Guard, it is a drill team made up of performers who practice and perform precise drill exercises. She was Captain of the Color Guard that year, and it was very important for her to go.
The trip would cost $3,000.00 for each student for the seven day trip. That included air fare, food, and housing. The students would stay in a Japanese Host home. This was a rare opportunity for her to travel and see firsthand the customs of the Japanese. The only problem was: we didn’t have money for her to go.
We Decide To Make Amish Friendship Bread
I put on my “thinking cap”. What could we do to make enough money for her to go to Japan? I remembered making Amish Friendship Bread at Christmastime to give as gifts. Everyone bragged about the bread. My friends always ask me to make more for them. The bread is not something you can buy in a store. I found this recipe among my Mother’s collection long after her death. So, my daughter and I decided we would make Amish Friendship Bread and sell it. We had no idea how well it would sell, and I think we were pretty brave to even try.
The Containers We Used To Make The Starter
We Make The Yeast Starter
A “starter” is necessary first of all. You cannot make the bread without the starter. The starter is made from yeast, and it takes 10 days to complete. If you are lucky enough to have a friend who has some starter, that’s great, otherwise you have to make your own. The reason the Amish called this bread AMISH FRIENDSHIP BREAD is because they always shared their starter with a friend! The first time I made the starter, I put the ingredients into a large bowl thinking the bowl would contain the rising mix. I was wrong! The next morning, I had starter all over my kitchen counter, and it had spilled out onto the floor. What a mess that was! I then purchased a large plastic container with a lid. That worked really well.
One Of The Containers With A Good Fitting Lid
Make The Starter
While the starter is “brewing” for the 10 days, your house will smell like a beer brewery! It’s a nice smell, though. I’m going to first tell you how to make the starter:
1 package of Active Dry Yeast, dissolved in 1 Cup of warm water. Make sure the water isn’t too hot, or you will kill the yeast. I use a candy thermometer. The water should be 100 degrees to 110 degrees. Add another 1 ½ Cup of warm water. Place this mixture into the large plastic container. Always stir the mixture with a wooden spoon. Do NOT use a metal spoon.
To the above add:
2 Cups sifted All Purpose Flour
1 Tablespoon Granulated Sugar
Day One: Begin the starter
Day Two: Stir
Day Three: Stir
Day Four: Stir
Day Five: Add 1 Cup of Granulated Sugar, 1 Cup sifted Flour and 1 Cup Whole Milk. Stir until there are NO lumps.
Day Six: Stir
Day Seven: Stir
Day Eight: Do Nothing
Day Nine: Do Nothing
Day Ten: Add 1 Cup of Granulated Sugar, 1 Cup sifted Flour and 1 Cup Whole Milk
After all 10 days are completed, divide the starter into four separate containers. I use a pint size Ziploc bag. This starter freezes well for use later. At this point, the Amish would share their starter with a friend, but I needed all I could make for our bread.
I found it easier to keep up with the days the starter had been brewing by placing a piece of paper on the top of the container and marking off each day. I'd also make a note on my calender.
Ingredients You Need To Make Amish Friendship Bread
The Wet Ingredients
Sifted Flour and Sugar
The Dry Ingredients
Ready To Make The Amish Friendship Bread
Now, you are ready to make the bread: This recipe will make two regular sized loaves.
In a large bowl: Mix together:
1 Cup of the Starter
1 Cup Wesson Oil
½ Cup Whole Milk
3 Eggs
1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
In a separate large bowl, you’ll combine the dry ingredients and mix well:
2 Cups Sifted All Purpose Flour
1 Cup Granulated Sugar
1 ½ Teaspoons Baking Powder
2 Teaspoons Ground Cinnamon
½ Teaspoon Baking Soda
1 Box of Instant Vanilla Pudding (a 5.1 oz. box)
½ Teaspoon Salt
I use my big mixer to mix all the ingredients together. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Mix together really well.
After it is all mixed well, you add 1 Cup of Chocolate Chips or 1 Cup of chopped Pecans or Walnuts. I would make some of each. Our best seller was the bread with the Chocolate Chips!
Pour into two regular sized loaf pans that have been sprayed with Pam. I use disposable loaf pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 10 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
The Nuts And Chocolate Chips Are Added
We Would Cover and Label The Bread
We would then cover the bread tightly with Saran Wrap, and place a sticky label on the top telling what kind of bread it was; Chocolate Chip, Pecan or Walnut. Also we typed on the label this bread is perishable! Keep refrigerated or freeze until you are ready to eat it. It cannot be left out on the kitchen counter! It will spoil quickly! We included our phone number so people could call and order more of the bread. We sold it on a money back guarantee, and no one EVER asked for their money back.
We Reached Our Goal Of $3,000.00 Plus Some Extra
I have to tell you, this bread sold as fast as we could make it. We had a regular assembly line going in my kitchen. I would have 6 separate containers of starter going at any given time, and we were making 8 loaves at one time. We priced our bread at $10.00 per loaf.
We earned enough to send my Daughter to Japan, plus enough to purchase a freezer to hold the extra loaves until they could be sold. The marketing of this bread is another story in itself. We would load up the car in the early morning and go around door to door and sell them. It took us three months of hard work and effort, but we did it.
Soon people were calling to order more bread. We could have had a good little business, but the laws that protect consumers prevented that. We were allowed to sell our bread to friends, but not to the general public unless my kitchen was inspected and passed all the local Health Department requirements. I was tempted to go through all that "red tape", but I decided it would have been too expensive to install special sinks, ovens, and other equipment.
We accomplished what we set out to do by working together to make and sell this bread. My Daughter had an experience she will never forget in Japan with the Color Guard.
I still make this Amish Friendship Bread from time to time, because my family loves it. I always have some starter in my freezer ready to make this delicious bread.
If you don't have a friend who has some starter, and you don't want to make it yourself, check out eBay. Someone on there usually has some for sale.

Loved the recipe and an inspiring hub. Bread looks yummy, no wonder you made so much on it :)
might give it a try.
What a GREAT story! Thank you so much for the inspiration. You have a nice writing style and really described well how to make this work. I make pickles, and in Wisconsin, we can make up to 5,000 jars of pickles in our home kitchens and sell the product at farmers' markets. I am thinking I may just do this as well. My mom used to make a Friendship Bread like this. It was called "Herman" because he was alive and growing daily. We loved that bread!
Thanks for sharing this - got it bookmarked now and will print off. I have been wanting to make this again but wasn't sure how to do the starter. This hub is just what I needed!
Hi daisynicholas. Thanks for reading my Hub on how I made money selling bread. I'd still like to start a little business selling this bread, but "they" make it too tough to go by the rules. Good luck with your venture! Regards.
Hi there Ruchira. So nice to see you. I do hope you'll make this. It really isn't hard, once you have the starter. Have a great day.
Hi Round with Raab. Thanks for reading my Hub on making and selling Amish Friendshi Bread! Wow! You do really well with your pickles. I can't even sell my bread at our local Farmer's Market because of the Health Dept's rules. I love the name "Herman" cause he grows each day! Thanks again.
Hi there, Kris Heeter, so glad you're going to make this delicious bread. The starter really isn't hard to make; it just takes time and a little patience. Let me know how you do with it, OK?
What an incredible story! The recipe is fantastic, too. Congratulations on turning bread-baking into such a successful project. You ended up teaching your daughter an incredibly valuable lesson, too, about goal-setting, hard work, and ingenuity.
Touching story all the way through! You certainly have a big heart and a beautiful soul!
always

Mary - I am going to try baking this. I love your hub. What a fantastic up-lifting story. Great hub. Voted up and sharing it.
Waw! Congratulations! How very proactive of you, I admire people who have that kind of drive to do things like the one you wrote about in this Hub. I have wanted to sell bake goods many times but I am full of considerations and always think me out of doing it; can’t get myself to simply do it! So good on you!
What a great fundraiser project this is. I see so many students who just go around asking for donations. It's heartwarming to see someone working for it. I can't wait to try this myself. Up and awesome just scratch the surface. God bless!
Sorry I didn't like this bread..but happy that so many people loved it..
Hi, livelonger, thanks for taking the time to read and commenting on my Hub about making Amish Friendship Bread. Thanks, too, for the nice compliments. I appreciate that! My daughter and I had a great time working together to accomplish our goal so she could go to Japan. Goodnight
Hi trsmd, sorry you didn't like the bread. I would have refunded your money if you bought it from me! Thanks for reading, though. Goodnight.
Hey there, Momma Mia, Nice to see you! Thanks for reading my Hub on making Amish Friendship Bread. Thanks for the nice compliments, too. See you again, soon...
Hi Mary615...congratulations on your very successful fundraiser. I have been given Amish Friendship bread before. It is both fun and delicious.
BTW, I noticed a tiny glitch as I moused-over your links. Though they are the right links when clicked, in the mouse-over it comes up with hub titles that are unrelated to the subject. I reported it in a forum so that they can fix the problem for you (and possibly others).
Hi poetvix, you are SO nice to read my Hub and make such a meaningful comment. I really appreciate that. I think it meant a lot to my Daughter to have taken a part in earning the money for the Japan trip. Thanks too for the votes! I do hope you will make Amish Friendship Bread. Let me know how it turns out for you. Goodnight.
Was this the recipe hub you were talking about? I usually don't like reading recipe hubs unless they have a nice pic :D. But, this hub was different. It's amazing. You didn't begin with the ingredients and I liked it. Glad you'll made it
Hi Claudia Tello, thanks for reading my Hub on making money from selling Amish Friendship Bread, and for the nice comment. Yes, we were determined to make this money, and we did! Goodnight.
Hi there, tarajeyaram, how nice of you to compliment me so. I do hope you will try and make this. It really isn't hard, just time consuming to make the starter. Thanks for the votes and for the share, too! See you again, soon....
Well hello, lobobrandon! Yep, this is the one. I'm so glad you read my Hub and liked it. I'm flattered since you don't usually read recipes. Hey, there are some poems I can't bear to read, either (don't tell anyone I said that, OK?) I might still get flagged cause there are lots of Amish Friendship Bread recipes out there! See you in the Forums.
What a great hub, very inspiring too. Pity about the red tape but you did what you had to do and your daughter has some great memories of working with you on this project which she will cherish I am sure. The trip to Japan was a great bonus.
Voted up
I remember making this bread long time ago. We had so much starter we didn't know what to do with it. We passed it to everyone we could. Loved your story.
Well done, Mary. A very inspiring read. I'm glad you accomplished your mission and more...
Mary, my hat's off to you!! What an accomplishment. I'm sure the marketing is a whole story all its own. I took some seminar classes, and I remember one of the speakers emphasizing over and over, you need to spend 40% of your time and resources on marketing. He also suggested checking with large churches who may have a commercially rated kitchen, or a restaurant that only serves breakfast and lunch.
Hi there, molometer! Thanks for reading my Hub on making and selling Amish Friendship Bread. Thanks for the vote, too! Yes, she and I had a great bonding experience making all that bread! I was so happy she got to go to Japan. She loved it there, and would like to go back someday. Goodnight.
Good evening moonlake. So nice to see you. Too bad you didn't put all that extra starter in the freezer. It keeps for a long time. Thanks for the nice compliment on my story about baking and selling the Amish Friendship Bread. Goodnight.
Good Evening Lady_E good to see you. Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment. I appreciate your doing that! So glad you found my Hub inspiring. Goodnight, friend.
Cool. Idea. I've never really wanted to ...bake...until now lol :) Thanks!
Hi rmcrayne, thanks for taking the time to ready my Hub on making and selling Amish Friendship Bread. I looked into trying to use a commercial facility to make our bread, but was unable to find one locally that would let us use their kitchen. That would have been perfect. They said their liability insurance would not have covered us if we got injured using their equiptment. Thanks for the nice compliment, too. Goodnight.
Good Evening, Chelseacharleston, so nice to see you. Thanks for reading and commenting . Hope this does make you want to bake. You'll love this Amish Friendship Bread! See you again...
I will have to give this bread a shot. I have never tried to make it before, but love baking bread. Thanks for sharing the recipe with us!
Hi there, tipoague, thanks for reading my Hub on baking and selling bread. If you enjoy baking, you will love this bread. Hope you will give it a try. Making the starter is the hardest part. After you have that, it's a breeze. Goodnight.
I enjoyed reading this hub Mary. Very inspiring and admirable. It just shows what we can do when we need to. It was an enterprising idea and you did it through determination. And what a reward! Your granddaughter was able to go on the trip and you got a new freezer.
Great hub and voting up

Bravo--you did it! Interesting to learn how, too. :) Thanks for sharing your experience! Voted up and bookmarked.
Mary615,
You are truly a wonderful Grandmother. That was a sweet gift of love for her. I hope she enjoyed her trip. The bread looked so good I could almost smell it.
This is a great Hub. I voted up and awesome.
Bobbi
Great job. Appreciate your efforts and the way they paid off:)
I am trying to get over the fact that the starter takes ten days to make ...
Thank you for the recipe. I might attempt it one day.
Regarding the whole idea of how to get the money for the trip - I think you did very well! Being creative and dedicated always helps.
All the best!
A very nice and informative hub. I absolutely love making Amish Friendship Bread...but I love it even more when I eat it!
Naa you won't get flagged this is your personal recipe. That way there are so many recipes that aren't original but people write them in their personal way like you did here :). Don't worry your secret is safe as I share in it as well :D
A yum yum hub that is really tasty. And in my top list of baking thanks for sharing.

What a great idea! I've been trying to think of ways to raise money for my daughter's Spanish Club trip to Cancun, Mexico that costs almost $1500 dollars. Maybe I'll give this a whirl...I'm not much of a baker, though! :)
Hi writer20, thanks so much for reading and commmenting on my Hub about making and sellin bread. Thanks, too, for the votes! Bye for now....
Hello, stayingalivemoma. So nice to see you today. Even if you aren't a baker, you could do this. People love the bread, and if they know it's for a good cause, they will help your daughter by buying your bread. You might even sell cookies or something else. Making the bread was the easy part; marketing it was a little more difficult. Fortunately, we had friends who were willing to buy our bread. Good Luck with your effort!
Raising $3,000 dollars sounds like a daunting if not impossible task and you did it! Fantastic, what an inspirational story!

Hi Mary,
I am so glad I saw this article. I LOVE friendship bread! I'm not sure what makes it so wonderful, but it certainly is! Thank you for sharing your recipe that I will bookmark.
Sharyn
Hi there, MM, Yes we made and sold enough Amish Friendship Bread to send my gal to Japan! Thanks for reading and commenting.
Hello, Sharyn's Slant. Thanks so much for reading my Hub on how we earned money from selling Amish Friendship Bread. We sure like it in my family, do hope you'll follow my recipe to make some of your own. Regards.
Wow! What an awesome story of determination and love, plus the bread sounds delicious.
Have you also written a hub about how your granddaughter became your daughter through adoption?
Hi, HBN, thanks so much for reading and commenting on my Hub about baking and selling Amish Friendship Bread. I always enjoy seeing you. I wrote a poem, Grandmother's Endless Love, that was about her. It's a long story, and it does get quite personal. Some day, I will write a Hub about how it came to be. I also adopted my Grandson, and another Granddaughter. They have been a joy in my life. Goodnight, friend.
My Mom taught all her girls (meaning me being one of them) how to bake bread. It was one of our family traditions, I suppose. There is nothing else like the smell of it wafting through the house. Ummm! I need to bookmark your hub...this recipe. I recently made Amish soft cookies...they are to die for! Thanks for the share. Voted up, useful and interesting. : )
Hi, girltalksshop, thanks for reading and commenting on my Hub about making and selling Amish Friendship Bread. You are right, there is nothing greater than the smell of bread in the oven! I'm not familiar with Amish soft cookies. Do you need a starter to make those? Thanks for the votes! Goodnight.
Hi Mary,
Wonderful story!
One thing that I find very difficult to get during my travels is good bread.
My mouth was watering at the end of your article!
Cheers,
John
I have made this bread before, in fact, I have the recipe in my website. When you make the starter, you can cut the recipe in half or fourths so that you have less of it. This is a very, very sweet bread -- almost could call it dessert! A lot of times the various lodges, such as the Elks Lodge, will rent out their kitchens which are commercial kitchens. It's a thought for you. Congratulations on a job well done, done, and redone about 300 times to make that money. That is fabulous! You should be very proud of yourselves!
Good Morning, John. So nice to see you today. Thanks for reading and commenting on my Hub about making and selling Amish Friendship Bread. Thanks, too for the nice compiment. Glad my Hub made your mouth water. Have a wonderful day, OK?
Hi, BakingBread-101, Thanks so much for reading my Hub, and commenting. You're right, this bread is very sweet, I think that's why everyone loves it so. I never seem to have enough starter, in fact I have some in my freezer right now. I checked with our local schools, lodges, etc. They wouldn't let me use their kitchen because of the liability factors. Said they were afraid we'd get burned or some dumb thing and sue them! I still have people who called this past Christmas and asked if I would make some bread for them to give as gifts! I did make a many loaves this past Christmas. I love making it. Thanks again. Regards
Mary, I see the makings of some sour-doughin' I'm loosing track but my starter is around 11 years old. The bread you made I've bought from Mennonite road side stands, and it causes a road fight between my dogs and me. I love it, just never chased a recipe. I like bread and it gets made around here 2 times a week. Delores Monet featured a less work Artisan style bread that for sopping plates it is most excellent but I still do a sourdough loaf every week. This recipe looks good and I'll have to pull some starter and give it a go and let you know if I pass or fail.
My hats off to you two 300 plus loaves of bread is indeed an admirable feat. I have 2 kitchens one is my bread kitchen and stays as clean as I can get it and is in the no dog zone. I cook with a 1952 O'Keeffe and Merritt that my Pa bought new and he taught me to cook on it and our neighbor Mrs. Ortiz taught me Sonoran style Mexican cooking. During the school year I was the breakfast and dinner chef, some how my little brother grew up not being able to boil an egg. I cook for me and the dogs now days and occasional get together and that's out on the spit or smoker with bread and all coming out of the bread kitchen, I've scribbled this recipe out and it's headed for a clip in my spice cabinet. I'm in the midst of 62 degree days of Arizona and go out and play in the dirt and desert most days, but first day coming up I'm going to give this a whirl, sounds like something I'll have to fight the urge to set and eat all at once.
You set out a fine essay on a great topic, helping the youngsters get a taste of life in the kitchen and learning that great opportunities are often cloaked in a bit of labor and what seems impossible is in reach if your willing to lend an ear to instruction and follow it through. I voted this up high for a multitude of reasons as well as the quality of a well laid writing,
Blessings,
50/dust
Hi, there, 50/dust. So nice to see you today! Thanks for reading and commenting on my Hub on how I made and sold Amish Friendship Bread. Thanks, too for the nice compliment and the votes! I'm glad you are familiar with this bread, and like it. I've never made sour dough bread like you make. I keep meaning to try that. This bread is sweet, and that's why the kids love it! Why don't you just print out this Hub; then you'll have the recipe when you're ready to bake some? We love this bread warm out of the oven, with butter on it! My daughter and I had a wonderful experience making and selling all this bread. She still talks about it! As I said earlier, I still make the bread and give it to friends. If you live closer, I'd share with you, too. Thanks again for your kind words, I appreciate that!
Hi Mary! It is me again. I found your hub really inspiring and find myself constantly thinking about your story. I am wondering how and where exactly did you sell your Amish bread? How did you advertise or promote it? I would really appreciate it if you could share your sales strategy. I live in another country, whit a different psyche and culture but I am sure I could do something like that where millions and millions of people live, I just need to lose the fear and go for it! Thanks Mary!
Hi there, Claudia Tello, So glad you read my Hub on how I made and sold Amish Friendship Bread. Marketing was the hard part of this whole endeaver. We started out by going to my Granddaughter's friends and families and asking them to buy our bread. They really wanted to help her go to Japan. Then we went into local stores and just asked for sales. One of the local grocery stores let us put a table outside. We put the bread on the table with a sign to explain what we were trying to do. We gave away samples for people to try to see if they liked the bread. Don't be afraid! Just do it. Good luck.
Thanks a lot Mary!!! I really appreciate this information. Once again: you are a true role model for achieving this goal in such a determinate and effective way!
Hi Mary,
I am sure that the bread was delicious because it was baked with love.
Voted up and away.
Have a good weekend.
Awesome hub! Rated and voted up :) Thank for inspiring.

Hello, vocalcoach. Thanks for the nice compliments! You made my day! Thanks, too, for the vote, I appreciate that! The recipe is really good for Amish Friendship Bread; do hope you'll try and make it. Goodnight
Hi, Mary. How talented you are, my dear. When you described the starter spilling out of the bowl all over your kitchen, you reminded me of that old Steve McQueen film, 'The Blob.' Did you ever see it? The stuff just kept growing and growing like your starter mix.
Hi, drbj, these are the things in life that make great memories. We still laugh about the starter going all over the floor. The stuff has a life of it's own! I don't know how I missed that movie with Steve McQueen, I'll make a point of watching it. Thanks for taking the time to read my Hub and commenting. See you again, soon...
Mary - you really inspired me by posting this hub. I have put this hub as one of My Favorite Hubs of the Week: Jan 15.
Hi, tarajeyaram, Thanks so much for reading and commenting on my Hub about making and selling Amish Friendship Bread. I'm honored that you would think it good enough to be one of your favorites! Kind regards....
Hello Mary, you have a grand slam of a hub here. I've tried my hand at bread a few times, but I won't be earning any money from it.
Good Morning, mckbirdbks! So nice to see you. Thanks so much for the nice compliment on my Hub. You should try making this bread; you'll be glad you did. Regards....
Wow, good for you Mary. Determination and positive thinking plus the fabulous Amish Bread really helped you raise $3,000. Your story is inspiring and may just give someone who still thinking about doing something the push they need.
Hi, editorsupemo, nice to see you! Yes, it did take determination, positive thinking, and hard work to make this idea work! I hope my story does inspire others. Regards...
mary615 - this story is such an inspiration! It just goes to show that a little creativity, perseverance and hard work truly pays off! What a wonderful lesson for your granddaughter as well.

Mary, what a great inspiring story about what can be accomplished to achieve two meaningful goals, both for your daughter. I remember years ago where I worked, we were all sharing this "starter" bread recipe and we all made a loaf of bread! Great story and hub. I gave you high thumbs up. Thank you.
Good Morning, ytsenoh, thanks so much for reading about how we baked and sold Amish Friendship Bread. Thanks for the nice compliment, and for the great votes, too! Maybe you'd like to start another batch of this great bread. Thanks again, regards...
My I thought I wasn't going to find that final comment but easy to see why you have so many.
A true gem and here's to many more to share on here.
Take care;
Eddy.
Hi Eddy, Thanks so much for readying my Hub on baking and selling Amish Friendship Bread. I appreciate your nice compliment, too. It was a fun experience for both me and my daughter. Love to you....
What an awesome hub!!!!!!! You and your daughter did a wonderful job in baking & selling your Amish Friendship Bread. It sounds like a yummy recipe; all I need is a cup of coffee and my morning paper. It just goes to show that hard work does pay off. I'm so glad that your daughter had a great time in Japan. You probably would have done well if you were to sell your product commercially. Again, I really enjoyed reading your hub!!!!!!!!!!
I love this bread! I have some starter in my freezer, which I really need to use. I have made it into muffins which is nice as well. I didn't know how to make the starter though; your Hub has been most helpful. Thank you and happy baking!
Voted up, useful and bookmarked for future reference! Thanks again!
Nina64, thanks so much for reading my Hub on baking and selling Amish Friendship Bread. Yes, we could have sold much more bread if I could have baked in an approved kitchen. I still have dreams of opening a bakery! So glad you enjoyed reading my Hub. See you again soon, I hope.
brsmom68, So glad you are familiar with Amish Friendship Bread and have made it. I never made muffins, I'll have to try that. I always keep starter in my freezer in case I want to make some bread. Glad you bookmarked the recipe, so you can make some starter! Thanks so much for the votes! Goodnight.
I tasted bread made from a starter yeast once and it was the best bread I ever tasted, been meaning to start one of my own and now I have a new way of rising and baking from another hub I am all set! Thanks so much.
Hi Jackie Lynnley, thanks for reading and commenting on my Hub about baking and selling Amish Friendship Bread. This bread is really delicious as you know if you are familiar with the bread made from this starter. Do hope you will follow my recipe and make starter of your own. Regards....
I will try this and it is great to know you can freeze it since I don't eat a lot of bread and have it more for company although I dearly love it. Homemade soup and a big warm loaf of bread. Nothing better.
Hi again, Jackie Lynnley. When I make this bread for my family, I freeze the loaf, then just slice it when we're ready to eat it. We can heat it in the microwave. The starter also freezes well. I keep some in the freezer all the time, and it never goes bad!
Wonderful Hub! Glad your bread business went well and your daughter had a good time in Japan, thanks to your hardwork and brilliant idea of selling your trademark bread to your friends! Way to go! Awesome.Vote up.
Hi there, ishwaryaa22! Thanks so much for reading and commenting on my Hub about baking and selling Amish Friendship Bread. Thanks for the nice compliment and for the votes, too! Yes, my daughter had an unforgetable trip to Japan. She really liked it there and hopes to go back someday.
Dear Mary : you are definitely a hard worker. And that was a brave undertaking. I use to have a home made fudge recipe , but Lord only knows what happened to it. I use to sell fudge out of our gift shop, but I did not go big time with it. God Bless You, and your dear family.
Hi, stars439. Thanks so much for reading my Hub on baking and selling Amish Friendship Bread. It's such a pleasure to see your beautiful child's photo. I read all about her on your profile. Also read about your gift shop. You know what hard work and determination is all about! Your blessing is appreciated, and returned many times over. Regards....
I like your story, your experience and your recipe. You have pitched a great idea in my mind. I also like making various recipes but yours is amazing.
Hi how-to-make. So nice to see you. Thanks for reading my Hub on how I made and sold Amish Friendship Bread. If you've never made this wonderful bread, I hope you will do so. You will love it! Thanks for the nice compliment, too. Goodnight.
What a good idea, good grandma. I just might try the starter your way. I tried it once and had the goo all over the place.

Good Morning, KDee411. Nice to see you today! Thanks for reading and commenting on my Hub about baking and selling Amish Friendship Bread. So pleased you will try making the starter using my recipe. As I said in my Hub, the first time I made the starter, it went all over the floor. What a mess! Have a wonderful day.
The story started out your granddaughter and ended up your daughter. How is that possible? Are you in Alabama?
Very easy. I adopted my Granddaughter. As my profile states, I'm from Florida. Goodnight.
Wow! The people have spoken. There are so many comments. This wonderful bread is awesome. I can almost smell its fantastic aroma. A great successful venture. Well done! I loved reading this hub, very informative.
I wonder if the ingredients can be found from other sources besides the local market.
You got my VOTE UP.
Have a great day my friend.
Hi there, carbon12. So nice to see you today! Thanks for reading about my making and selling Amish Friendship Bread. Thanks, too, for the vote. This bread is the greatest: out of the oven with butter is SO good. I think you can get the started from Amazon. That is the toughest part, getting the starter. I hope your day is wonderful for you, too.
Hi again, carbon12. I just checked eBay and they do have sellers who are selling the starter.
What a great story! I liked the way you wove the details around the recipe. It never was meant to be a recipe hub.
The bread looks awesome. Loved the pics.
Voted up, awesome and useful.

What a wonderful story and terrific money raising idea. Your bread looks aswesome, no wonder people were willing to pay $10 a loaf. Gredat photos and marvelous writing. Up, interesting and awesome.
Hello, I liked your story, I would like to try this bread but I live in London UK, can some of those ingredients we can get here vanilla pudding for example ? Can you advice, also was it a bread or a cake ?
Ta very much
Nina
Hi KoffeeKlatch Gals. Thanks so much for reading my Hub on how I made and sold Amish Friendship Bread. Thanks for the votes, too. I appreciate that so much.
Thanks for the link to your wonderful Amish Friendship Cake!
Hi nina, I really don't know if you can purchase the instant pudding where you live or not. We call this a bread, but it is sweet like a cake. Good luck.
I'm from Amish country too. Next trip you could try ShooFly Pie. People seem to really like it. Why? I don't know, but they do.
Good Morning, PenHitsTheFan (I love that)! I've heard of Shoo Fly Pie. There was a song about that done by the Andrews Sisters years ago, I think. Thanks for reading my Hub about Amish Friendship Bread. Bye for now.

Inspiring story of perseverance. I, too, have a delicious product to sell and am bogged down with legalities. It'll cost a lot of money just to start legit.
