How To Make A Layered Salad: Instructions and Photos
By mary615
The Layered Salad
This is a great salad to make the day before your dinner. It’s always a favorite to take to someone’s house who is having the dinner and asked you to bring a dish. Everyone loves it. Unlike other salads, this one actually gets better the next day. No limp lettuce! I have found that this salad actually tastes better the 3rd. day after it’s made!
You absolutely have to have a container with a tight fitting lid. A large Tupperware container with a lid is ideal, but the salad isn’t as pretty and showy as a glass container. I’m going to make this one in a glass container so you can see the pretty colors in the salad. If I know my family, there won’t be any left over.
I’ll place Saran Wrap tightly over the top to seal the salad.
Ingredients For The Layered Salad
You will need:
2 heads of fresh Ice Burg Lettuce
About ½ cup each:
Tomatoes: Diced
Green Onions: Cut into small pieces. I include the top part of the Onion. I call these Spring Onions.
Green Peppers: Chopped
Radishes: sliced thin
Carrots: these look nicer in the salad if they are sliced thin
1 Pint REAL HELLMAN’S Mayonnaise (NO substitute!)
1 Large Bag of Frozen Green Peas
1 Large Bag of Shredded Cheddar Cheese
Bacon Bits
Ingredients For The Layered Salad
I am spoiled since I discovered the ready-to-use vegetables in the Super Market. I used to chop and slice all these things by hand. Now I buy them already prepared. It’s more convenient, and I think it makes a prettier salad because all the pieces are cut uniformly.
Wash the Lettuce well. With your hands, tear enough Lettuce to cover the bottom of the salad container up to about 1 inch in height.
Sprinkle the various vegetables on top of the Lettuce uniformly.
Make another layer of the Lettuce, and another layer of the vegetables.
Continue building up in this manner until you are at the top of the container.
When you reach the top of container, sprinkle the frozen peas uniformly all over the top.
Use the Hellman’s Mayo to spread all over the top of the salad. Pretend you are icing a cake.
Seal the container tightly, Refrigerate overnight.
Tear Lettuce And Place On The Bottom Of The Bowl
Adding The Chopped Ingredients For The Layered Salad
Keep Adding Vegetables To The Layered Salad
Building Up The Layered Salad
The Layered Salad Is Almost Completed
Package of Frozen Peas Are Placed On The Top
The Layered Salad Is "Iced" With The Hellman's Mayo
Before Serving, Sprinkle Sharp Shredded Cheese On The Top Of The Layered Salad
When you are ready to serve the salad, sprinkle the Shredded Cheese all over the top. I put the Bacon Bits in a separate bowl for those who would like them.

Hi Lord, by all means put in the salad anything you like. Jalepenos would sure add a little "heat" to the salad. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment. Hope you had a blessed Christmas. I'm still stuffed! See you....
Thanks for the great recipe. Only problem - no salad ingredients at home. Will try this.

This is great. My best friend suffers from diabetes and this is something I can make that she can eat and it looks good! Thank you. I do so love useful information and the pictures are wonderful. If you don't mind, I'm going to have my class make this following the pictures. I teach developmentally disabled students many of whom are non readers. It's wonderful to find recipes they can follow more independently using pictures. I know they will love it.
Love this idea. It makes the salad look so festive and has so many delicious veggies in it. Thanks for sharing this recipe and the step by step directions.

This is so pretty to look at! The frosting drew me in. I don't typically like mayo but I'll have to try this. Thanks !
Hi emilybee. Good to see you today! You really don't taste the mayo on the layered salad as you think you would. I'm like you; I don't usually like the taste of mayo. I do hope you'll try this. Everybody loves it. I hope you are having a wonderful day!
Very interesting recipe, have to try it. I guess the mayo kind of seals the salad too! Thanks for sharing this easy recipe with us. Will be very useful this summer :)
Hi, LaThing, I do hope you will give this layered salad a try. It's always a big hit at any dinner I take one to. You are right about the Mayo. The frozen peas don't even taste raw after sitting overnight with the mayo on the top. Please let me know how you like it.
This does look good, have had similar salads before. Thanks for sharing the how to:) (think I may leave out the onions:) Now that the seasons are changing what a great intro to a nice summer day!
I like the way you wrote this hub and the salad looks delicious.
Hi heart4theword, I do hope you will try to make this layered salad. Yes, leave out the onions if you like. Put any kind of veg. you like in it. I sometimes add thinly sliced radishes just for some added color. Thanks for reading and commenting!
Hi, Lastheart. Thanks for reading about the layered salad. Thanks for the compliment, I appreciate that. Goodnight.

A healthy recipe rich in greens, I love Habaneros, but you wouldn't mind me adding my Jalepenos..right Mary? Good for cold plates and a trip to a lake. I wonder if after done you share your cooking with your family at the end of the shoot session? Time for me to make me a quick salad, not this rich, but nutritious as well...!
Thanks Mary!
