No Time For God: A Poem
66A Child In Prayer
A poem about a Mother who had no time to take her children to Sunday School, and no time for their religious training.
No Time For God
As a child, I went to Sunday School,
And vowed my children would go, too,
But over the years of being a housewife and Mother,
I always had much too much to do.
After the first child, there was no time,
For evening devotions and prayers,
No time for talks of Jesus and His love,
My child was just tucked in with a kiss and Teddy Bear.
After the second child, time was even more precious,
No time for church, worship, and devotion,
So I put the children to bed each night,
Smothered in hugs and baby lotion.
By the time my third child came along,
I was wrapped up in my family and just me,
My children’s religious training,
Was limited to: “Now I Lay Me............."
The awakening of my spiritual life came,
When the fourth child was only nine,
She began to ask to go to Sunday School,
But I told her I had no time.
God spoke to me through this child,
When she asked so quietly, but true:
“Mother, wouldn’t it be a terrible thing,
If God had no time for YOU?”

Oh yes I know where you're coming from. When I was in 6th grade there was a teacher's strike. My mom found a private religious school near our apartment building to which I could go on foot. They taught us better than in the public schools and we had religious lessons and church every Wednesday. Then I also went to Sunday school which was held on Saturdays where I learned the Latvian language had many subjects but religion was another priority there. So I can say I benefited from this very much and it made me grow up understanding God.
Out of the mouths of babes... Beautiful poem, Mary. I wish I had had children to teach me such important lessons. There is no manual in living. We learn from each other. Thanks for teaching me by becoming vulnerable yourself (sharing).
@mary615: Mary, though late to poetry you have arrived!
Your style flows well, cleanly and concise,
Your subject's sincere, inspired & precise,
The moral is there as profound yet so true,
Let Poetry come naturally so it finds YOU!

Voted Up! Beautiful! Boy, did somebody say, "Out of the mouths of babes?"
Mary, I love the last line. Children are so profound! Thank you.
Hi Mary615! It is nice to "meet" you on Hubpages. I saw the fan mail you left and then checked out your profile. I enjoyed your poem "No Time For God". That last line really grabs the attention of the reader. Then, I saw that you shared my Beatitudes hub. Thank you! I look forward to reading more from you and thank you so much for the fan mail! Blessings to you and yours.
Mary615, you have such a great talent! I love your work
...another great example of your world class writing and will be posted by honor and pride to my Facebook page with a direct link back here - and yes that is a clasic last line - you approach your writing like a wizard with words and a wise philosopher who has much to say - and this piece is just simply breathtaking in its simplicity and in its depth - such poetic duality here! lake erie time ontario canada 1:00pm
Great poem, i must indeed say that you are getting better and better each time you write

Great reminder to not leave out the more important things in life! Thank you for sharing this!
Nicely said, "What if God has no time for you?" Good message and one that I greatly appreciate.
As parents we guide our children into life in this world but often neglect to guide them into life in the spiritual. There is never a time to forgo prayer and devotions with our little ones. When I fail in that, I am convicted. Thank you for a beautiful reminder.
This is just great! I really like your word choice and your perspective. Voted up!
Very good! Voted up.
Reminds me of part of the message in Malachi: 'Return to me, and I will return to you'.
Blessings.
I reely enjoyed it, thank you Mary
I love it when Children, have such a pure heart:) What a good memory:) Personally I like to think of Church, not as spiritual training...but a place I can go to fellowship with others who are like minded. To praise God for His wonderful Mercy and bring up our children, with Spiritual Love:)
Beautiful! The simplicity of the truth always hits home. I had to cry. Great poem/hub.
